What does this passage reveal about God’s character is a question I’ve been asked to consider whenever I’m reading scripture.
In devotions we have been reading through Isaiah. A question that has arisen is whether God’s character is consistent from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Comments like the New Testament is all about love and the Old Testament is about the law (God seems harsher). Our limited human brains have a hard time understanding the vastness and infiniteness of God.
His personality at its base is love. Love can be compassionate and forgiving, but love is also holiness and righteousness which can’t stand sin and requires punishment. God constantly forgives us. At some point He has to say this isn’t ok anymore because He cares about us. He wants us to be with us forever. He wants us to choose Him. Our decisions create a divide.
